Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a specialized type of physical therapy designed to treat vestibular disorders, which cause symptoms such as:
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Lightheadedness
  • Balance issues or unsteadiness
  • Nausea
The vestibular system, located in the brain, plays a key role in controlling posture, balance, and coordination during activities like walking or running. It relies on several components, including vision, the auditory system (ears), facial muscles, and sensory receptors on the soles of the feet. Common techniques used in vestibular rehabilitation include:
  • Addressing cervical spine dysfunction
  • Retraining the body’s balance system through targeted exercises
  • Performing positional maneuvers
  • Educating patients on safe positions and movements
The inner ear, near the auditory nerve, is responsible for regulating balance. Often, dizziness and balance issues stem from dysfunction in this area. The goal of Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is to help retrain the brain to properly interpret signals from the vestibular system, along with sensory input from proprioception (body awareness) and vision. With consistent practice of the prescribed exercises, many patients experience a significant reduction or complete resolution of dizziness and balance issues.
